In the Name of God and at the Hands of the Devil

Life of Laurent Deville, Executioner of High and Low Justice in the Town of Saint Germain sur la Somme from 1497 to 1504

Killing is his job, healing is his vocation, and Laurent Deville makes an art form of both, as the only person invested with the powers to give death and soothe pain. Kept at a distance by his townsfolk, who despise him as an untouchable, Laurent is torn between accepting his fate and wishing to escape it, in a harrowing struggle set against the physical, emotional and spiritual life of late-Medieval times. This vivid, ever-changing landscape surrounds the intertwined vicissitudes of musicians and farmers, of artisans and lords, of beggars and prostitutes, all part of a multi-faceted community from which Laurent is excluded. As the instrument of an audience cheering death and craving life with the same fearful intensity, the hangman mirrors the cruellest instincts in the heart of mankind. He is the one that nobody wants near, yet nobody can do without.
